Networking for Job Opportunities

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

The most dramatic changes we have seen in networking for job opportunities are related to Internet use and specifically, social media. Gone are the days when your entire network consisted of friends, family and co-workers. Today we are able to connect with millions of people and target specific industries, companies and people opening up a whole new list of job search strategies and increased job opportunities.

Not so long ago, a company interested in hiring would have put an advertisement in a newspaper, you would submit your resume and then sit back hoping to be called in for an interview. Today, they are more likely to post the position on the Internet. Whether a company or recruiting website or job boards, an online search has the potential to provide results for thousands of jobs from around the world. The emergence and rapid growth of social media has given recruiters and HR professionals the resources to seek out potential candidates through online profiles and studies show 80% are logging in to Linkedin. With access to 60 million professionals it’s no wonder! With a population greater than all but two countries in the world, Facebook is evolving into the ultimate social media networking and marketing tool. Gone are the days when only businesses actively marketed products and services. Potential candidates are networking online to market their expertise and position themselves as the next CEO or VP.

Networking with HR professionals and recruiters is an obvious and necessary component of your job search online and off. So too, is attending networking meetings to share information with other professionals in career transition and develop valuable contacts and leads. What about networking with employees? Those who are gainfully employed could offer a valuable connection as many companies offer their employees a substantial bonus, $2,000 to $10,000 for referring a potential candidate who is successfully hired to fill a position.

Networking is the most successful job search tool available surpassing all other strategies combined. Online job boards account for only 3-5% of jobs so the next time you are online, allocate your time accordingly. Present a professional online profile, update your status regularly and NETWORK online and off to secure job opportunities and land the job that’s right for you!

Stay Current and Up to Date

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

plaid-suitStaying current and up to date will likely be the most influential component in the success of your future career. ExecuNet, GRAY MATTERS: Experienced Executives Gaining The Edge, provides an extensive and valuable career guide for ”senior” executives in today’s job market. Despite the aging workforce, age discrimination in the workplace continues to increase. Identifying it and learning strategies to help limit this age-related bias during the job search are critical to managing an executive career.

Last year, employment descrimination claims increased by 15% but specifically, age descrimination charges increased by 29% according to The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. ExecuNet surveyed 287 executives, 71% indicated that age discrimination is a serious problem and in ExecuNet’s 2009 Executive Job Market Intelligence Report, 44% of senior level executives surveyed agreed that their age will affect their ability to land their next position, an increase of 33% over last year.

Dave Opton, CEO and Founder of ExecuNetshares his own personal experience noting age discrimination is alive and well, but not insurmountable. He says, “What does convince employers (at nearly any age is projecting energy, commitment and genuine interest in the opportunity at hand. An up-to-date shirt, good grooming and eye glasses from this century don’t hurt either.”

Further advice offered by ExecuNet members includes, keeping up to date on practices and new ideas, dress in current and stylish fashion, stay fit, look healthy, keep current with the culture, Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter and technology. Hiring professionals are more likely to hire someone not unlike themselves so if your attire is more similar to what their great grandfather would wear, you’ve never heard of a tweet and you think American Idol is a reference to Marilyn Monroe, don’t expect a second interview.

Clear Signs of a Recovery

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

clearingMark Anderson, ExecuNet President and Chief Economist says, “Conditions have clearly changed. We can now see the first clear signs of a recovery indicated by responses, (from recruiters) that are similar to what we saw coming out of the last recession in the second quarter of 2003. Executive recruiters expect hiring to increase as we move toward the end of the year”.

As recruiters see signs of new hiring from their client companies the negative outlook earlier this spring is slowly turning around. Those job seekers landing jobs are spreading the word and a large percentage of those still seeking work are seeing their networking contacts evolve into influencial leads as they move into their new roles. What goes around comes around.

Your consistent effort to introduce who you are, share your area of expertise, announce the position you are seeking and offer your guidance and support will likely be the reasons you are considered for your next potential job opportunity.

Do you have a professional resume? Do you have a significant online profile? Are you actively networking? If you answer yes to all of these questions you may be landing your next job sooner than you think!

If you are in need of assistance contact Elite Resumes for certified, professional executive career management services.

Toronto ExecuNet Speaker, Paul Copcutt

Monday, January 5th, 2009

On Wednesday, January 28th we are pleased to have Paul Copcutt of Square Peg Solution to speak at the Toronto ExecuNet Meeting.

square-pegsolution2Paul Copcutt of Square Peg Solution is Canada’s leading personal brand consultant, combining a passion for people with a realization that strengths and specialization are the keys to success, he guides his clients to that outcome. His own specialty is to work with professional and executive women who are struggling with identifying a logical and authentic path to be successful in business.

Do you exist on Google and why should you care?

Because the web is fast becoming THE place where employers and recruiters check you out – sometimes before they will even meet with you. So if you have that questionable profile on Facebook or posted a witty but offensive comment on a blog – how do you deal with that digital dirt and what else can you be doing to raise a more positive virtual picture of yourself. The world of work is changing as fast as the technology driving it and to keep up you now have to develop a whole new approach to managing your career and finding jobs.

Personal branding allows us to differentiate ourselves by authentically aligning more of who we are with what we do, working on projects and seeking out opportunities that feel right because the objectives and goals are more in line with the direction we want to go. In this informative session participants will learn the importance of personal branding and having a good Google score.

Why session is relevant;

  • Job seekers need to be able to stand out and differentiate themselves from others.
  • The traditional way to find a job has changed they need to be more tactical with their approach.
  • Time is always a factor so it is best to be working on or seeking opportunities that are aligned with a chosen direction.

Participants will leave with;

  • How to measure a Google ranking – your GQ score.
  • Three concrete action steps for you to build your on line brand – immediately.
  • Understand the one thing you should never do on line.

Little Evidence of 2000 Bell Canada Managers Online

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

According to a Financial Post article, BCE insiders say more than 2,000 people out of approximately 15,000 managers will lose their jobs during a “100-day plan” unveiled by new chief executive George Cope, to change the public image of BCE’s main unit, Bell Canada.

Despite this announcement, I am surprised to see, or I should say, not to see, any increase in online activity from Bell Canada Managers, who had to have seen the writing on the wall long ago.

Whether the inactivity is related to the highly publicized skills shortage or the anticipation of a lucrative severence package, these managers do not appear to be concerned about online networking to secure new positions.  It is possibile that networking is being done in person rather than online but should there be any doubt of the significance of networking, I am sharing an excerpt from ExecuNet’s Executive Insider newsletter;

“NETWORKING is undoubtedly the best method for identifying career options, as 70 percent of the senior-level executives we’ve surveyed credit this activity for their success, and more than half of corporate and search firm recruiters reportedly find candidates this way.” Robyn Greenspan, Editor in Chief, ExecuNet.

As a Professional Certified Resume Writer and Career Coach I would be happy to provide a free resume critique and share my “networking” expertise with you.

Networking and Your Career

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Are you actively networking?  If not, you are in the minority.  You are likely missing out on opportunities for advancement in your current career and if you are searching for a job, you are facing a much greater struggle than necessary.

Recruiters list networking as one of their most effective means of finding senior managers and more than two-thirds of executives listed networking as their best method of finding jobs.  The percentage of managers planning to leave their positions within the next six months is astounding and of course there are those that will be caught in the world of corporate downsizing or restructuring, all of whom will be entering into the job search market.  While they may not look for work on job boards or in newspapers, you can bet the smart ones are nurturing their networks.

Start out by simply making a list of anyone and everyone whom you think could be helpful in offering you contacts and/or advice and then expand your contacts through networking.  Attend professional networking meetings such as ExecuNet.  And there is no shortage of the number of available networking sites such as LinkedIn, Naymz and Ziggs.  As our world of networking continues to evolve, our networks are becoming less about who we know, than who the people we know, know!

2008 Executive Job Market Intelligence Report

Friday, May 9th, 2008

Each year ExecuNet publishes a comprehensive report on the current status of the executive job market.  As always these surveys make for interesting reading, especially the 2008 survey which suggests that even though our minds are constantly being directed to a slowdown in the economy, some key points from this report suggest otherwise.

¬ “Thanks in part to an aging workforce and global economic growth, the demand for executive talent continues to increase while the threat of recession looms.”

¬ “More than 70% of search firms and corporate human resource professionals believe that there is a shortage of executive talent, and two-thirds (67%) say war for executive talent has intensified over the last year amid increasing economic uncertainly.”

¬ “Nearly all (86% corporate human resource executives and 61% of search firms report that they do not routinely post positions with a total compensation of $200,000 and above on public websites.”

¬ “Recruiters don’t deny that age can be an issue, but 71% of search consultants say their clients are less focused on age than they were in prior years; and 57% of corporate HR executives say that when over 50, the candidate’s age is not a negative factor in hiring decisions.”

¬ “Increasing demand in High Tech, Healthcare, Energy, and Business Services sectors, combined with a shortage of qualified talent and sustained economic growth overseas, is driving better than expected job growth at the executive level.” Dave Opton, ExecuNet’s CEO and Founder states: “Unfortunately, many of the opportunities created this year will remain out of reach to those who fail to read beyond the headlines,” “However, given the current pace of change, the consequences of ignoring opportunities to enhance your network and failing to closely monitor the marketplace are clearly rising.”

Finally I think this is a very telling comment:

¬ “More than 25% of search firms added professional staff in the last quarter of 2007, and another 46% have plans to hire more recruiters in the first quarter of 2008.” Mark Anderson, President, ExecuNet comments, “ They wouldn’t be expanding if they didn’t think they would have the search assignments to support additional staff,” recalling the hard lessons in the industry in 2001.

Are you a Guerrilla job searcher?

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

Last week at ExecuNet, Toronto, myself and 35 other senior executives were fortunate to listen to a dynamic and informative speaker. David Perry, Managing Partner at Perry-Martel, an executive search firm based in Ottawa, spoke on “Guerrilla Marketing for Job Searchers”. This topic that related directly to his best selling book, “Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters”, he co-authored with Jay Conrad Levinson and was published by John Wiley & Sons in 2005. This book is a must read for all job searchers and is available from www.amazon.com.

I have listened to many speakers over the years, some good, some mediocre, and some bad. David was dynamic! He had everyone riveted to their chairs, not wanting to miss one iota of his presentation. Information loaded with Guerrilla tactics was freely shared with the enticed audience and revolved around 6 key areas:

What is Guerrilla Marketing?

How to start a Job Search

The Force Multiplier Effect

Be Found

Find a Job

Guerrilla Marketing Attack

The major premise was that it’s easier to be Found than Find a job. This is based on using the online tools available to promote yourself on the web, now used as a prime research and screening tool. David’s method of search for senior executive candidates across North America and it works very well, is to use the following:

www.execunet.com (membership-based)

www.zoominfo.com

www.linkedIn.com

www.google.com

Type your name in any of these sites. Do you have a presence? If so, are you prominent? Does the content do you justice? Are you showing your true colours? Is the web content on your name professional?  If you answered no to any of these question you need to do some major rethinking. I will cover how to elevate your web profile soon. Stay tuned!!
