How to Maintain Your Sanity During a Stressful Job Search

REFLECT

During a stressful job search, it’s the perfect time to assess your true career and life goals. Right now, you have the time to really consider what you want and to make decisions based on those desires. Take advantage of this time.

Consider what you really want the future of your career to look life AND make the best effort to really be truthful with yourself about your desires for your personal life. It’s important to your health and well-being that the two align. If you’re constantly having to make conflicting decisions to advance your career and maintain your personal life, you’ll always feel as though you’re in a state of turmoil.

While you have a job, it can be difficult to be objective about your goals and make efforts to achieve those goals. Therefore, while you’re searching for a job, you can make decisions that align to both your career goals and personal life.

SET GOALS

First, make goals that align to both your career and personal values. Then make a plan to accomplish those goals. Additionally, throughout your job search, make intentional decisions to align to your objectives  and ensure you’re happy with your job.

Make it a point to write out your goals and keep them in a place where you can physically refer to them. Having them in front of you makes it easier to make intentional decisions that help you accomplish your goals. After all, your goals are not merely abstract ideas, they are concrete things that you want to achieve, and they should be treated as such.

DO THINGS YOU ENJOY

Searching for a job and all the considerations that entails, is stressful in and of itself. Therefore, take this time to do things you enjoy. Create some adventures for yourself. Check some items off your bucket list. Engaging in activities you enjoy keeps you grounded. It helps you focus on the things that matter to you most. Additionally, it helps you avoid distractions to ensure that you’re working your way towards accomplishing your goals.
